If you’re looking for the best place to see the sunset in Koh Samui, read on. Whether it’s your first time on the island or tenth time, a visit to Air Bar, at least once, should be on your tropical island vacation to-do list.
It’s a sunset that will completely consume your attention as you consume craft cocktails at a cocktail bar that is from another world. Be the person in your family and group of friends that’s in-the-know about the best bars and sunset spots. If you’re staying in Taling Ngam Bay, drop by for a cocktail and a sunset you’ll be still talking about after your luxury escape has ended.
Location: Private, romantic, secluded
Air Bar is located in Taling Ngam Bay on the south coast of Samui. If you’re staying in Bophut or Chaweng, a taxi will take about 40 minutes and cost about 1000 baht. It’s worth it. Air Bar was featured on the New York Times 1000 Places to See in Your Lifetime. It’s a bucket-list bar. Arrive before sunset to get your choice of seat and sip on a pre-sunset champagne cocktail. Drinks: From Dom to Chang there’s a drink for all palates.
The Royal Samui Sunset, with colours that match the sky, is the perfect tropical accompaniment to sundown. Celebrate the coconuts below and order a Pinacolada with rum, coconut cream, coconut milk and pineapple. For classic resort style, choose a Margarita; get it frozen to cool you down. For something more adventurous, try the Thai Ginger Pomelo Margarita. Let the tropical flavours burst and bounce in your mouth. The Thai Sweet Basil Daiquiri incorporates a bit of your destination in a classic rum and lime cocktail. For a tropical flare, the Thai watermelon juice is shaken not stirred with Ketel One Vodka for a twist on the classic martini. All the champagne cocktails are made with Moet & Chandon Imperial Brut. Share: a bottle of Moet as the sun goes down. a bottle of Veuve Cliquot to celebrate the day. a bottle of Billiecart-Salmon to celebrate romance. a bottle of Dom Perignon to celebrate an extra special milestone.
For something locally sourced, try the duck spring rolls, or the chicken satay. Pair oysters with your glass of Duval Leroy Brut. Most of the cocktails will pair nicely with a platter or sushi; if you want to keep the carb count down, try the sashimi platter. For something to go with your beer, try the tempura or the lamb kofta. There are vegan and vegetarian options. There’s smashed avocado and chips, vegetable tempura and marinated feta and olives. If you’re in complete holiday mode and don’t want to make any decisions, we recommend the Sunset Cocktail package: Two drinks and the daily selection of canapés. Take the hassle out of ordering: focus on the sunset, good conversation and luxury island vibes.
Best Time To Go
Time of day
We recommend arriving a little before sunset, 5:30-6:00 p.m., to choose the seat that pairs with your vibe. Sit at the bar and watch your mixologist craft your cocktails as the sun sets behind. Melt into soft white sofas that wrap around the edge of the bar. Recline on day beds and pyramid cushions for something more private and romantic.
Time of year
There’s a rainy season in Thailand and in Koh Samui the peak is from October to November. Even if you travel to Samui during the rainy season, you’ll find that there’ll be pockets of sunshine during the day. So you can still spend time reading the latest travel magazine by the infinity pool. Air Bar is completely outdoors, the ceiling is the sky and the walls, there’re no walls. This means that when it’s raining, it’s closed. There’s a bar above called Serene Cafe and Bar that’s in an open-air, Thai-style pavilion. The views of the ocean and Five Islands are the same, but you’ll stay dry. For more about Samui weather and all it has to offer, read our post on Samui: What you need to know, and why you need to go.
The View, The Venue, The Atmosphere: Words can’t describe it
Air Bar is: a place to propose. a place to celebrate. a place to reward yourself for working hard. a place to start or end the evening. It has an unbeatable view that will exceed your expectations before, during and after sunset. Before sunset, the sea and sky blend as one. The azure ocean unfolds and extends out to the Five Islands that rest quietly on the horizon. Guarded by the sea gypsies, these islands are home to the protected swift bird and their delicately spun nests that are sought after for a now controversial soup. As you sip on your Margarita, it will look as though the islands are sitting on the salty-lime rim of your glass.
As sunset approaches, pinks and oranges start to appear behind white clouds magnifying the sky and forcing you to take countless photos. Just when you think you’ve taken the best photo, the colours intensify once more and you have to put your cocktail back down and start snapping. After dark a different atmosphere presents itself. The bar illuminates and slowly changes colours. Greens, blues, pinks and purples morph and undulate like the tides. Take advantage of the late happy from 8:00-10:00 p.m. buy one get one free. Order the Chocolate Martini – a chocolate cake in a glass with Belvedere Vodka – for a decadent dessert-cocktail. To learn how to make it, read our post here.
After drinks: Continue the celebration
If it gets too hot, take a dip in the infinity pool above the lush greenery and coconut trees next to the bar. Get whisked down in the buggy to Flames for a rustic beachfront dining experience with flickering lanterns, the ocean lapping beside a beachside bonfire and freshly grilled seafood. Run a bath, get in your robe, watch an in-room movie at the Intercontinental Koh Samui, and get your Chocolate Martini delivered to your room.
